SFD7 – Connected Data, Transporter and Private “Cloud” Storage

In the IT community I wonder if there is anyone who hasn’t at least tried out (if not heavily used) Dropbox, Box, Google Drive or one of the many other “sync-n-share” cloud storage offerings.  As a refresher for those of us familiar (or new information for those not aware), cloud-based storage solutions provide the ability to store unstructured (file) data in ... SFD7 – Catalogic Software Addresses Data Copy Management

About 10 years ago I worked on a project for a large bank where we put in place the ability to replicate test data from the production environment to a third array deployed in a lower cost data centre.  The whole design was perhaps overly complex, with scripting required to re-establish replicated LUNs when switching between production sites and to semi-automate ... X-IO Technologies Takes SPC-1 Value Top Spot with New All-Flash Array

Following on from HDS and NetApp posting news about their Storage Performance Council SPC-1 benchmark results, we’ve seen another two vendors perform tests that have quickly trumped NetApp in the price/performance category.  Current top spot now goes to X-IO Technologies and their new ISE 800 All-Flash Array, which achieves a $0.32/SPC IOP figure, some 40% lower than that achieved by NetApp. ... All-Flash Arrays – Call For Information (Updated)

It’s just over 12 months since I posted this spreadsheet on all-flash array comparisons, based on previous work from Calvin Zito and Vaughn Stewart.  I posted an update here but this is now woefully out of date and so I’m rewriting the comparison matrix and hope to have a new version online in February.  I’ve started contacting vendors but I’m ... Compression – Table Stakes for Next Generation Storage Platforms

The storage world of tomorrow will see a divergence of technology into two main camps; storage will be either capacity or performance focused.  At the performance end, today’s newest generations of storage platforms are taking advantage of technologies such as flash to deliver high throughput and low latency I/O for the latest generation of performance hungry applications and hypervisors.  High ... HDS Influencers’ Day and Speaking in Tech Podcast

Last week I was fortunate to spend the first few days in Colorado Springs, staying at The Broadmoor resort.  I was attending Hitachi’s HDS Influencers’ Day, a small select group of 30 people chosen from across the industry to hear how Hitachi/HDS is changing and what we can expect from them in the future.  Events as small as this are ...
